Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where does Alumni Relations sit in an organization?

It depends on the organization’s structure and goals. For example, law firms often place alumni relations within the marketing department to support client development. In other organizations, it may sit in Human Resources, focusing on talent engagement and rehiring. The placement reflects the priorities of your organization.

Do you need a dedicated alumni portal?

If you’re planning to invest in building a strong alumni program, partnering with a dedicated alumni platform is highly recommended. In my previous roles at global law firms and companies, I successfully launched three alumni networks using such platforms. They help ensure the program aligns with your organization’s brand and engagement goals.

I have strong relationships with the leading corporate alumni platforms and would be happy to facilitate introductions, coordinate demos, and support the implementation process. That said, while a platform is a valuable tool, it’s not enough on its own – a successful program also requires strategic planning, consistent engagement, and internal alignment.

Are you available for speaking opportunities?

Absolutely. I’m frequently invited to speak at webinars and industry conferences, and I’d be happy to engage with your organization. I’m available to meet with your leadership team to share proven success stories, advocate for the value of having an established alumni program, and present updated benchmarking reports to support informed decision-making.

Leadership support is essential for the success of this initiative. I can help facilitate meaningful dialogue that builds awareness around the importance of reconnecting with former employees and the long-term value it brings to your organization.

Feel free to reach out via email – I’d be happy to coordinate next steps.

How long does it take to build a complete alumni program from the ground up?

Building a comprehensive alumni program typically takes about one year from start to finish. The process begins with several weeks of discovery, meetings with leadership, and understanding your organization’s culture and goals. Based on that, I’ll present a tailored plan that includes a recommended first-year budget.

Once that plan is approved, we’ll evaluate alumni platform vendors through demos to identify the best fit for your organization. Implementation usually takes around six months and includes thorough testing and refinement to ensure a smooth launch.

For a deeper dive into this process, feel free to visit my blog, where I share detailed articles and insights on building successful alumni programs.

When can we expect to start seeing KPIs after the program is built?

To set realistic expectations, results won’t appear immediately. Year 1 is focused on building the foundation: understanding your organization’s culture, securing leadership buy-in, selecting a platform (if you choose to do so), and launching the program. This phase includes data collection, platform testing, and internal alignment.

In Year 2, we shift towards engagement, both internally and externally. This includes developing content, spotlighting alumni, launching the job board, offering alumni perks, and hosting events. It’s what I call the “fun year,” where excitement builds and the program gains visibility across the organization.

Year 3 is when we begin to measure meaningful KPIs. These may include:

  • New business generated through alumni connections

  • Rehiring boomerang employees

  • Platform engagement (sign-ups, profile updates)

  • Event attendance

  • Survey insights on alumni needs and insights
